AGM Minutes November 2006

Introduction and Apologies - Patrick Crossouard
The President introduced the meeting and welcomed all of the members. Apologies were received from Joachim Bildstein (Technology), Iain Hillier (Publication and Dialog) and Steve Hobson (External Relations).

2005 AGM minutes Approval - Mike Millar
The minutes from the 2005 AGM had been circulated to the membership before the meeting. The only matter to arise was that related to Gift Aid on membership fees, when looked into it was decided that this would not be very cost effective.

The motion to accept the minutes for the AGM held on Monday, 21st November 2005 was proposed, seconded and passed.

Presidents Report - Patrick Crossouard
The President said that another year promoting Petrophysics through a charitable organisation like the LPS, cannot be successful without dedication of members, particularly committee members. The President thanked the members who supported the LPS and all the committee members for their effort during a time where the oil business is resurging at a tremendous pace.

Special thanks were given to Nigel Dodds who was presented with an England Rugby shirt and to Chris Pennington, who was presented with a Huddersfield Town FC shirt.

Membership Report - Assia Belhaouas
There are125 paid members, up from 119 last year, this includes 36 new members.

Treasurer's Report - Chris Pennington
The accounts for year-ending 2005 were reviewed and a forecast for 2006 was presented, see appendix. In summary, the accounts are healthy and under control.

Unrestricted funds doubled since March 2000 to £70,790 at end 2004 which allowed commitment to a large increase in academic funding in 2005, £13,598 in 2005 compared to £4,785 in 2004. This resulted in a LOSS on the year of £8,590. But we still had unrestricted funds of £62,200.

2005 was a year of consolidation with an increase in paid membership (119 cf. 112 in 2004). We held three seminars (Tight Gas, Mature Basin Petrophysics and Basic FEII), but with only modest paid attendances (30-45) and a significant number of non-members attending. The Open Day at University of Manchester was attended by over 150 students. Seminar income level maintained, but significant increase in seminar and monthly meetings expenditure. DiaLog sponsorship and advertising income levels slightly reduced and Publications sales down.

The Financial challenge for 2007 is to maintain healthy reserves to enable the LPS to carry out its obligations as a professional and charitable society, taking account of:
  • Continued higher level of committed academic funding
  • "Flat" membership levels (historically low)
  • Attendance at monthly meetings often disappointing
  • Increased costs of monthly meetings and difficulties in attracting speakers
  • Constant challenge to identify the right topics for seminars
  • Three successful one-day seminars per year are required
  • LPS Committee requires the help and support of its members

Technology Report
There was a full programme of 8 evening talks throughout the year, but one cancelled meeting. The programme highlights included a mixture of LWD applications, new wireline through casing density, Saturation, population of reservoir model and cased hole evaluation of acid treatment.

The LPS held four Seminars during 2006;
New Technology
Faser: which had disappointing attendance, but excellent presentations and good reviews from attendees.
Pay Cut: which was a resounding success (74 attendees) thanks to Chris Pennington and Nigel Radcliffe for their tremendous efforts
Basic FE on core analysis will be held in December (expecting around 50).

Arrangements Report - Adam Moss
The LPS had a difficult year due to the renovation work at the Geolsoc at Burlington House that might have affected the attendance. This also led us to organise the Pay Cut (off) Seminar at Imperial College, there were some positive reactions to this forced move. The menu selection for all the venues has received a strong appreciation by the attendees.

Newsletter Report - Jonathan Lean
The Newsletter saw some punctuality improvement over last year and was a good substitute for the LPS website, which has experienced problems during the year. The Newsletter included rregular and reliable information on meetings, presentations, the president's message, news and forthcoming events. The membership was asked if there is anything they would like to see different in the Newsletter for 2007?

External Relations
The LPS held another very successful open-day in January, this time at Leicester University. In attendance were about 200 students from the following universities: Leicester University, Leeds University, Imperial College London, Royal Holloway College, Manchester University and University College London. Ten companies (operators, service companies and consultants) made presentations and/or participated in the poster sessions as well as sponsoring the event.

The LPS continues to co-sponsor a PhD student from the University of Leicester.

The next LPS University Open-day will be on 24th January 2007 at Royal Holloway. The LPS is expecting SLB, BHI, RPS, HEL, COP, BG, XOM, Shell, ResLab and PC to contribute.

Publications & Website - Iain Hillier
The LPS has had major problems with the website this year. There has been a big increase in sales of publications, with sales in excess of £800. During 2007, AFES has volunteered to sell some of our publications at their meetings.

Website; There have been technical problems with the new hosting company. We moved from a Boston (US) based amateur host to a UK professional hosting company during 2006. However increased security requirements (emails from site) and technical host server problems has disabled the website.

The LPS is now working with a Staines based website design, hosting and programming company to give the membership a fully working and reliable website. We will work on recovering the data on the site and updating the design to be more modern and professional, as it is 'the public face of the LPS'. We also plan to make future upgrades in capability which should allow the LPS to post enhanced content such as; Rw Catalogue plus updates, voting software, etc.
