A message from the President

Just in time! The LPS wishes you a Merry Christmas (or a nice Winter Celebration!) and a happy and prosperous year 2008.

However we are still busy.
Before the end of the year we have two events on the 17th of December:

  • Basic FE III Seminar at the GeolSoc that will concentrate on carbonates (already many have registered).
  • Xmas party, where you are invited, at 6pm The King's Head Champagne Bar 10 Stafford Street. This is a very short stroll from the GeolSoc.

Then in January we also start 2008 with also two events:

  • Our usual New Technology Seminar on the 21st at the Geological Society where the service companies will enlighten us with their latest tool or software developments.
  • LPS Open Day at Durham University on the 23rd.

The LPS committee will be glad to meet most of you in some of those above events.

Finally at last month AGM (that was followed by an exiting balloon debate where Iain McNeil flew the highest defending Adam Moss cherished core petrophysics) I was given the duty of becoming your past president for the forth-coming 2 years. Welcome to Jonathan Lean, the new LPS president, who I am sure will carry the flag even higher.

It has been a privilege to stand for two years as president of an association representing a rather scarce but vibrant community. Another year promoting Petrophysics through a charity organisation cannot be successful without dedication of members, particularly committee members.

I wish to thank the members who supported the LPS. Most I wish to thank all the committee members for their effort during a time where the oil business is resurging at a tremendous pace.

From VP Newsletter:

Firstly, I've been asked by the Treasurer to please say a big thank you to BakerAtlas and Schlumberger for co-sponsoring the Presidents Evening on the 17th December. Mike also asks that if anyone else would also like to sponsor the event, please get in touch with him.

There will be no evening meeting on the 17th of course, but if anyone feels the need for mental stimulation they should of course attend the one-day seminar. Please see details here:

Call for Presentations for LPS Seminar:
Reservoir Management/Monitoring, 27th March 2008

In the last newsletter I mentioned plans to hold a Spring seminar on the above topic. There have been a number of expressions of interest so far from oil companies, service companies and academia and the programme is beginning to shape up; more news on that in the new year. However if anyone out there who I haven't yet contacted feels they may have something to add to a seminar such as this in the way of a presentation, or simply an idea of the directions we could take or topics we could include, please contact Robert or myself.

As a reminder, the scope of the seminar will revolve around the down hole or subsurface data measurement requirements of field management. This is a wide ranging topic encompassing, at the biggest scale, 4D or Life of Field Seismic, (LoFS), down to the well scale of downhole pressure measurements, downhole, or in the age of fibre optics technology even distributed temperature measurements. There will also be room for presentations on cased hole logging technologies and, we hope, some talk of the visions of the future such as smart wells, intelligent completions all the way up to the Digital Oilfield Solutions that are starting to be envisioned by a number of operators and service companies.

LPS Open Day at Durham University: 23rd January 2007

The LPS is coordinating an Open Day to be held at Durham University on 23rd January 2007. This event in the past has attracted around 200 students from several universities where geoscience courses are run. A number of E&P and service companies participate at the event providing a great forum for students to meet petrophysicists. If you are interested in attending or participating, please contact Sharlene Seegoolam.
