A message from the President
A successful start for 2007 in January:
- The New Technology Seminar on the 21st January at the Geological Society got the year off to a good start. We only had four talks this year, but they were of a very high quality and the seminar was well attended. I was very please to see the high level of student representation and I hope this will continue for 2008.
- The LPS Open Day at Durham University on the 23rd of January was very successful. Almost 200 undergraduate and post graduate students, academics and industry staff were present for a day of presentations, discussions and promotion of the discipline of petrophysics to the next generation of petrotechnical staff. Special thanks goes to the organisers at Durham University and of course our VP External Relations, Sharelene Seegoolam for coordinating the event, and to all those who gave talks and fronted stands on the day.
Are you a LPS member? If not, beware, our VP Membership will track you down. (Membership form).
Events in February and March are as follows:
Our Evening talk on the 18th February will be presented by Assia Belhaouas of PetroCanada, who will talk on "The Application of the Azimuthal Density tool in the Saxon Development" The talk will cover the physics of the tool and its applications in the drilling of development wells in Petro-Canada's Saxon field. The talk will demonstrate how the tool along with seismic data reinforced the decision to steer and how it increased the pay count in comparison with the standard density tool. The increasing resolution of LWD measurements coupled with the ability to take them around the borehole means that LWD is becoming an ever more valuable and useful tool for the petrophysicist, so I'm sure the talk will be very informative.
On the 27th of March we will hold a one-day seminar entitled "Tools and Techniques for Successful Reservoir Monitoring and Management". you may have seen advertising for this seminar already around your companies. The agenda will be finalised very soon, and will include talks on the basics of reservoir management, the use of 4D seismic in field monitoring, the use of production logging, developments in automated downhole monitoring and well control technology (smart wells/intelligent completions) and integrated monitoring and management systems (digital oilfield initiatives). I would therefore ask you to keep a weather eye on the website, www.lps.org.uk for further details as they arrive.
Regards
Jonathan Lean LPS President
From VP Newsletter:
A big thank-you to BP, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes and Senergy for sponsoring the LPS in 2008. If your company would like to sponsor the LPS please contact Mike Miller (mike.millar@petro-canada.com)
We would also like to thank all those who sponsored the University Open Day at Durham University. Baker Hughes, BG, Hess, Schlumberger and Shell should all take a well earned bow for helping the next generation to see the joys of petrophysiscs.
All the Best
