A message from the President

April saw a very well attended LPS Evening Meeting at Burlington House, where our LPS part-sponsored (along with Conoco-Phillips) student from Leicester University, Joanne Tudge, gave a great presentation on her PhD research into issues surrounding the presence of conductive clays in hydrocarbon reservoirs. She also presented her experiences in her time away from Leicester contributing the Ocean Drilling Programme (ODP) which has taken her from offshore survival training in Japan to life on board the recently commissioned drill ship Chikyu and on to geological field trips on Svalbard, dodging polar bears while examining some fantastic looking outcrops (and all at no cost to the LPS I'm sure you will be glad to learn!).

The problems of clay conductivity and its consequences in the identification of "low resistivity pay" is, I'm sure, familiar to many petrophysicists but linking it to clay type, volume and habit using real logs and cores is very useful and Joanne's approach engendered a good level of debate after the presentation and which continued on during wine and nibbles! It was also good to see other students from Leicester on the evening too. Work is also well in progress in organising the next LPS seminar, scheduled for 26th June at Burlington House and tentatively entitled "The Use of Statistics in Formation Evaluation". We already have talks confirmed from a number of sources in the oil company, consultancy and academic communities on a wide range of subjects. For more details see further down the newsletter.

Lastly, to all those travelling up to Edinburgh for the SPWLA Symposium at the end of the month, I hope you all have an enjoyable and worthwhile time North of the border. Unfortunately I can't make it due to a mixture of work and domestic pressures so I bid you all Bon Voyage!
