A message from the President

Prof. Chris Elders gave a very interesting talk on the 15th October on Geoscience careers, which resulted in long discussions by unfortunately a low but of high quality attendance.

Assia, just reported that we still stand at 123 members, a number that put us in line with the 2006 membership of 124.

On our next meeting on the 19th of November we hold the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 17:30 when you are all (the 123 bonafide members) welcome to elect the new committee. Any member is also welcome to run for a post on the committee that will be put to vote by Iain McNeil, our past president, who can be contacted as follow:

This will be followed by a Balloon debate on The Most Useful Formation Evaluation Technique.

On a another note, just a reminder that 17th December is a special day for the LPS (i.e. in your diary):

  • Basic FE IV Seminar at the Geolsoc that will concentrate on carbonates.
  • Xmas party, where you are all invited

6pm at The King's Head Champagne Bar, 10 Stafford Street

  • 21st January: LPS New Technology Seminar.
  • 23rd January: LPS Open Day at Durham University.
  • 25-28th May: 2008 Annual Symposium of the SPWLA organized by AFES in Edinburgh.

LPS Monthly Meeting: Monday 19th November: Burlington House (Note 5.30 pm start)
The Annual General Meeting: Followed by...
The Grand LPS Balloon Debate: The Most Useful Formation Evaluation Technique

This year the LPS Committee would like to try something a bit different and hopefully a little light-hearted as a post AGM Discussion. We intend to host a Balloon Debate. Or perhaps, in an era of reality TV competitions it could be subtitled:

I'm a Formation Evaluation Technique: Get Me Out of Here!

Or perhaps... Strictly Come Logging

The format is simple, a variety of presenters will make an empassioned series of speeches advocating their particular formation evaluation technique or tool. These will include:

Core Analysis
Depth Measurement
Image Analysis
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
Formation and Well Testing
Seismic/Sonic
Nuclear Tools
Resistivity/Conductivity Tools

After the first round you the audience will get the opportunity to vote out one method - don't worry, there will be no phone poll rigging! Thereafter the remaining advocates will have to make a second round of shorter, even more passionate calls for survival, when another round of voting will take place. And so it will continue until we whittle the field away or get bored and open the wine, whichever comes first!

I hope you get the idea, last in the balloon survives, it's pretty simple, and we hope, a way of debating the relative merits of a whole range of FE techniques in a fun, light hearted way.

SEE YOU THERE!
