A message from the President
It's evening as I write this November's presidents message and I'm sitting at home in front of the PC hearing the sounds of fireworks going off in my neighbourhood. If it's Guy Fawkes night, I'm shocked to think that this must mean that Christmas is not too far away. How the year has flown! We've plenty of LPS business to conduct before the year is out, and events to plan for 2009, so on to the business at hand.
Firstly, special thanks must go to Gavin Hunt of Spectramap Ltd for his October presentation on their SpecCam-IR spectroscopy technology, which can be used for real-time analysis of cuttings and core material for mining and petroleum applications. The meeting was well attended and the talk was thought provoking and lead to a good standard of question and debate after the formal presentation.
Thereafter on 17th November we hold the Annual General Meeting, where all bonafide LPS members are welcome to elect the new committee under the auspices of Past President Patrick Crossouard. Patrick is in the final stages of organising the Committee for 2009, so if any member wishes to run for any position at this late stage, please contact him as soon as possible.
To entice you further, the AGM will be followed by an off topic talk. These talks tend to have a loose affiliation to geology, geography or travel and adventure. In past years we have had talks on dowsing, the geology of wine, round-the-world yacht racing and the Ocean Drilling Project. This year's talk will be by Norman and Maggie Magowan, who undertook a Pan-America motorbike ride from Chile to Alaska in 2004 as both a personal adventure and as a fundraiser for Cancer Research UK. Please therefore make a special effort to come along to the AGM. Click here for more details and a few photos taken directly from Norman and Maggie's website: www.panamericanadventure.com
On another note, just a reminder that 15h December sees our final one day seminar for 2008; Basic FE: Pushing and Pulling at the Geolsoc that will concentrate on the basics of wireline and LWD data acquisition and analysis, comparing and contrasting the two conveyance methods. As previously this is an education seminar primarily focused at nonpetrophysicists: to expose them to the basics of the subject. We therefore ask members to publicise the event in their organisation to ensure the widest possible exposure. Why not print the poster out and display it somewhere prominent in your office?
We will also be following this seminar with our traditional President's Evening. This will be
held at the King's Head Champagne bar, 10 Stafford Street as per last year, and is open to all
LPS members, not just those attending the seminar. Hope to see you there!
